Summer Term 2012

Which booklets/ topics/ themes etc will be covered in the Summer term and roughly how long will each topic take
?

Exploration 2 weeks
The Reformation 2 weeks
The Spanish Armada 2 weeks
Gunpowder Plot 2 weeks

Will there be an end of topic test or any formal homeworks/ assessed coursework for a particular topic?  If so, what will it entail and roughly when will it be set?

There will be Continuous Assessment worth 20% that will vary according to individual classes.

Are there any resources on Learning NI that parents should be aware of concerning any of the topics/ booklets that will be covered this term? 

Nothing available for Form 1 as a whole but individual teachers regularly post work on LNI.

Summer Examination

End of term examination worth 80% which will assess the 4 topics above. There will be a mixture of short answer questions, structured questions and skills based exercises. Time allowed for exam: 1 hour


Spring Term 2012

Which booklets/ topics/ themes etc will be covered in the Spring term and roughly how long will each topic take?

In History Pupils will study 1600 & 1700 Centuries with the key topics including:

  •  Exploration and Expansion
  • The Reformation
  • The Spanish Armada
  • The Gunpowder Plot

Each topic will take approximately 4 weeks. Pupils will be issued with a new textbook –Think History.

Will there be an end of topic test or any formal homeworks/ assessed coursework for a particular topic?  If so, what will it entail and roughly when will it be set?

There will be an element of Continuous Assessment which will form part of the Summer Report grade. This will take place around the mid-term break and will be worth 20%. Each class will be informed by their teacher on the exact timing of this as well as the nature of the assessment.

There will be an examination based on the topics above. It will be worth 80% and will be one hour in length. The paper will be a mixture of short answer questions and longer paragraph responses.

Are there any resources on Learning NI that parents should be aware of concerning any of the topics/ booklets that will be covered this term? 

There will be resources on LNI and pupils will be made aware of these by their teacher.

Autumn/Winter Term 2011

Which booklets/ topics/ themes etc will be covered in the Christmas term and roughly how long will each topic take?

The skills of the historian  - this will take pupils up until the Christmas break.

Will there be an end of topic test or any formal homeworks/ assessed coursework for a particular topic?  If so, what will it entail and roughly when will it be set?

Pupils will do an assessed task in the first few weeks of September  based on a timeline of their life so far. It is a pictorial piece using different types of evidence and will be marked out of 10. It will be worth 20% of their Winter report result.

Their notebook will also be marked on content, note-taking and presentation. Again a mark out of 10. This will be ongoing during the term. It will be worth 20% of their Winter report result.

Finally in the week before or after half term (depending on timetable) pupils will sit a factual test based on the ‘Skills of the Historian’ textbook. This will consist of short answer questions testing, for example, chronology, measuring time, sources and anachronisms. This will be marked /30. It will be worth 60% of their Winter report result.

Pupils will be shown examples of good practice in class using examples of work from previous years.
