Spring Term 2012
1. Which booklets/ topics/ themes etc will be covered in the Spring term and roughly how long will each topic take?
Booklet 3 : Where in the World : 4-5 weeks (December into January)
A skills based course which looks at some Geography basics to include:
- World maps for key human and physical locations
- Different types of maps and plans
- Latitude and longitude
- Time Zones
- Using an atlas
Booklet 4: Mapping our World : 6 to 8 weeks (January to February)
A skills based course which looks at mapwork basics to include:
- Using Ordnance Survey maps
- Direction and distance
- Grid References
- Map symbols
- Using scale on maps
- Contours and height on maps
- Map practice
Booklet 5: Belfast : 6-8 weeks (March into term 3)
A skills based course which looks at our local area to include:
- Factual information
- Site and situation
- Early development
- Physical setting
- OS Belfast mapwork
- Recent changes
- Future plans
2. Will there be an end of topic test or any formal homeworks/ assessed coursework for a particular topic? If so, what will it entail and roughly when will it be set?
No formal assessment : class tests given but nothing towards the summer examination
The summer examination will assess all work from Booklet 3 : Where in the world : onwards at 100%
3. Are there any resources on Learning NI that parents should be aware of concerning any of the topics/ booklets that will be covered this term? If so please give brief details or the name of the revision sheet etc.

The "What is Geography?" booklet has a series of assessed homeworks and tasks :

The main assessment is the write up of the fieldwork that Form One do on the Lisburn Road. The work is done over an extended period in class and at home. The breakdown of marks and advice is clearly set out in the pupil booklet.
There is a section on Learning NI called Form One Geography support resources where staff put copies of materials and booklet. Examples of good practice are used in class.
