Summer Term 2012
Which booklets/ topics/ themes etc will be covered in the Summer term and roughly how long will each topic take?
Unit 5A, C
- Talk and write about which sports you can play Use of the verb jouer au + sports
- Present tense endings of ER verbs
- Talk and write about what you do at the weekend
- Use of nous and vous form of ER verbs
Unit 8A, B, D
- Use of j’aime and je n’aime pas
- Talk and write about your favourite colours, group and film
- Use of mon and ma
- Use of son and sa
- Describe someone’s likes and dislikes
Unit 9A
- Use of jouer du and de la with musical instruments
Will there be an end of topic test or any formal homeworks/ assessed coursework for a particular topic? If so, what will it entail and roughly when will it be set?
Learning homeworks each week as needed for Vocabulary tests, from the following topics (but not all):
- Sports you can play
- Present tense endings of ER verbs, e.g. jouer
- Weekend activities
- Things you like and dislike
- Favourite colours, group, book and film
- Musical instruments
Written homeworks will include exercises from the Grey Voilà workbook as needed throughout the topics. Exercises from the Voilà textbook as needed.
- Written description of what you do in your free time (sports I play, other activities, places I go at the weekend, who with, when, musical instruments).
- Written description of a friend.
- Learning the description of their friend for the Summer oral examination (at approximately the beginning of May).
Are there any resources on Learning NI that parents should be aware of concerning any of the topics/ booklets that will be covered this term?
There is a Form 1 French section on LNI that all pupils are enrolled in. In this pupils and parents can find support, resources, practice exercises, WebPages and instructions for each topic and Unit we do. There is also a support booklet for the summer oral examination. Examples of Good practice can be found on LNI.
Summer Examination
The French Summer examination grade will be made of the following:
Listening (20%) - Done in class before the main examinations start (start of May approximately), 30 minutes long.
Speaking (30%) – 1 minute presentation about a friend recorded on the computer during class time before the main examinations start (start of May approximately).
Reading (20%) and Writing (30%) - Two-part examination paper done during timetabled examination week, approximately 50 minutes long.
What to revise:
- Grammar patterns
- Verbs
- Vocabulary
- Spelling
- The core topic areas in all units.
- Writing short sentences and paragraphs in French
Note especially the topics below:
Unit 5A, C

Unit 9A

- Use of feminine adjectives
- Talk and write about things in your bedroom
- Use of avoir verb
- Talk and write about things in your living room
- Correct use of adjectives
- Ask what there is in your house
Spring Term 2012
1. Which booklets/ topics/ themes etc will be covered in the Spring term and roughly how long will each topic take?
Units 5A & 5C (First half of January 2012):
- Sports - Jouer au + sport
- -er verb endings (all forms for recognition; focus on je/tu/il/elle)
- Other Weekend activities with –er verbs
- Connectors (parfois, souvent, le weekend)
- Negatives (ne…pas)
Units 7A and B (Second half of January 2012):
- Aller + à, au etc. (all forms for recognition ; focus on je/tu/il/elle)
- connectors (parfois, souvent, le weekend)
- Revision of places in town + à, au etc (club de jeunes – patinoire)
Mid Feb to mid March - No French, classes stop for Second Language Taster sessions.
Units 8A, B and D (end March 2012):
- Questions on likes and dislikes
- Colours and opinions
- Possessive adjectives (revision of mon, ma, mes etc)

Learning homeworks each week / fortnight for Vocabulary tests, from the following topics (but not all):
• Sports: jouer au p.51
• Weekend activities p.51
• Aller à + time connectors p.69
• Places to go + à, au etc. (club de jeunes – patinoire)
• Ta couleur préférée p.77
• Colours (+ gris, rose and violet) p.77
Formal homeworks:
Exercises from the Grey Voilà workbook as needed throughout the topics.
Written pieces on:
- favourite sports
- weekend activities
- where you like to go
- favourite things
ICT exploration at home - to explore language learning sites and online exercises and to research websites on places in a town.

There is a F1 French section on LNI where pupils and parents can find support, resources, practice exercises, WebPages and instructions for each topic and Unit.

Autumn/Winter Term 2011
Which booklets/ topics/ themes etc will be covered in the Christmas term and roughly how long will each topic take?
- Myself and my family (Voilà textbook units 1 and 2) - Approx 6 weeks (September and 1st half of October).
- Where I live – my town (Voilà units 4C and D, unit 6) - approx 6 weeks (2nd half of October to November controlled assessments).
- The house, rooms and colours (Voilà unit 10) - rest of December (this unit is needed for the summer exams).

- Written description of themselves and their family (approx mid October).
- Learning the description of their family for an oral presentation (approx end October).

- Spelling bee. Learning new words for a class spelling bee (approx end November).
Controlled assessments / Winter exams (all the below during Controlled assessment time):
- Oral of 10 basic questions
- Listening paper
- Writing paper
- Reading paper
