Parents - Form One

There is a booklet aimed especially at First Form pupils, designed to introduce them to the school and helping them settle into Methody as quickly as possible.
Copies of the booklet will be available at the Induction Evening [held in June so pupils can meet their tutor group before starting at Methody in September] and by

There are also some documents to help new Form One pupils with the transition from P7 to Form One/Year 8 in the key areas of literacy and numeracy.  Recently the  College has worked with three of our largest “feeder” schools, Stranmillis PS, Fullerton House and Downey House, to identify some examples of spellings done in P7 with which we hope pupils in Form One would be familiar.  Likewise, we have provided some questions in P7 Maths and their answers for the purpose of identifying topics with which incoming pupils should be familiar.

To help parents and pupils further with the transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3, we have included copies of English and Maths exams for Form 1 pupils in recent years, with a mark scheme and solutions as appropriate.  There are also examples of good practice in extended writing by some Form 1 pupils, to demonstrate the standard of literacy to which we believe all should aspire.  We hope that these are of some use.

Transitional Documents: Literacy & Numeracy

Below are some examples of documents that can help new Form One pupils with the transition from P7 to Form One/Year 8 in the key areas of literacy and numeracy.

Literacy Skills
Much of the material covered in P6 and P7 is dealt with again in Form 1 to try to ensure that all pupils start MCB at a similar mathematical level.  However, a certain degree of knowledge is assumed of the following topics:

Multiplication & division by 10, 100, 1000
Basic identification of fractions (i.e. not even adding using a common denominator)
Adding & subtracting numbers mentally
Times tables up to 12 x 12
Multiplying & dividing by whole numbers
Multiplying decimals
Metric Units
Time (12hr and 24hr clocks)
Compass points and angles
Tally charts, frequency tables & bar charts

If you are unsure about a topic or think you would like some extra practice, have a look at the worksheets provided below: we’ve provided the answers too!
