Rolls Royce Science Prize

In 2016 Dr Janet Coulter, a Senior Lecturer of Fashion Design at the University of Ulster, approached Methody to see if pupils and staff would be interested in collaborating with her on a project to develop electronic textiles. Dr Coulter’s concept had been entered into the Rolls Royce Science Prize alongside approximately 2000 other entries from all over the UK. The idea was shortlisted to the final 6 and has been awarded £6000 to aid its development.

The team of pupils and staff

The project is the first of its kind and here in Methody it is successfully linking staff and pupils across a number of subjects: Technology, Art and Design and Physics. The students applied to be part of the team and were awarded a position based on their interdisciplinary skills. They will be mentored and guided by the following staff; Mrs Davidson (Art and Design), Mr McKee (Technology and Design) and Miss Copeland (Physics), as well as Dr Coulter (University of Ulster).

The project will be developed over a period of 24 weeks and we hope to produce a monthly diary entry that will be available online to keep you up to date with our progress. The finals of the Rolls Royce Science Prize will take place in the London Science Museum in May 2017.
