Equestrian Club

In the past year, we have had pupils competing in many events including at The Balmoral Showgrounds and Knockagh Equestrian Centre.

The Balmoral Showgrounds

This year we had two teams enter the annual Inter Schools show jumping competition at Balmoral. These teams were made up of juniors - Izzy Riley, Katie Riley, John Hamilton, Robyn Maginnis and Nikki Eames, whilst the seniors were made up of Hannah Moore and Olivia McNaboe.

The teams competed exceedingly well; however, in the Junior section the team did not make the speed round due to unfortunate refusals, whilst the seniors were piped to the post. Despite these results the Junior team came third in the tack and turn out competition.  All the hard work of cleaning tack and plaiting had paid off!

  Knockagh Lodge Equestrian Centre

The next competition was the Ulster Schools showjumping at Knockagh Lodge. The team entered was made up of Izzy Riley, Katie Riley, John Hamilton and Anna Kelly. The pupils jumped a range of fences from 95cm to 1m very well but unfortunately this year did not finish in the top 4, coming sixth overall. Despite not winning this they competed exceedingly well and thoroughly enjoyed the event.

In the individual competition Susannah King has been competing and has to date been very successful in jumping clear rounds but has unfortunately been pipped to the post with regards to her times. We continue to wish her all the best for the last event.

Other Success

In success outside of school Izzy and Katie Riley were selected for the Northern Ireland Tetrathlon team which has seen them having to compete locally on a monthly basis. In recent months they have competed with the team in Wales, being involved in running 1.5km, shooting, swimming and cross-country. The pupils are now practicing for their next event against Southern Ireland during the summer.

About the Equestrian Club

Throughout the year there are a variety of competitions held on Saturdays, in which numerous students take part. This provides students with the opportunities to meet others from different year groups and schools, learn to work as part of a team, practice their show jumping skills and enjoy a sport they have in common, whilst representing the College.

The club meets on Friday afternoons, for more information, contact Miss Bond.
