Debating Society (Senior)

The Senior Debating Society meets every Friday lunchtime in K3 and is open to anyone in forms four to upper sixth with an interest in public speaking and team debating. We enter a range of competitions throughout the year, offering opportunities for exercising skills in individual and in team performances against other schools.

Congratulations to Julia Fitzpatrick and Jasmijn Hofman who represented Northern Ireland at this year's World Schools' Debating Championship. The event is intended to draw together students from across the globe into a forum where developing analytical skills and global awareness is facilitated and nourished. Already the biggest schools' debating event of the year, the 2018 WSDC in Zagreb, Croatia, was the largest yet, with 67 countries represented at the competition. For the first time ever, Northern Ireland competed and the girls were delighted to win Best New Nation.

Congratulations to Julia Fitzpatrick and Jasmijn Hofman of L6th who travelled to Trinity College Dublin on Friday for a competitive weekend of debating.  It was the first time a NI school had entered the competition and MCB came home winners!  The girls had to debate 5 preliminary rounds, a semi-final and a final to win the trophy. They debated various motions and the girls were awarded best and second best speaker respectively in individual speaker points.
