World Schools Debating Championships

to Jasmijn Hofman, Zara Watson and Julia Fitzpatrick, who have been selected to represent Northern Ireland at the World Schools Debating Championships, held in Sri Lanka this summer.
The World Schools Debating Championships is the most respected international English-language debating competition in the world, with over 70 nations competing. As well as encouraging competition between the most talented young debaters in the world, the competition aims to promote international understanding and celebrate free speech. Past patrons of the Championships include Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Tony Blair.
Last year was the first time in the 20-year history of the competition that Northern Ireland entered a team to represent the nation. The team beat 12 other nations to win the title of Best New Nation in the world, coming within a few points of making the knock-out rounds.
Jasmijn and Julia made it through to the finals day of the Oxford Union Schools competition, which is the largest debating competition in the UK.
