RCO Diploma Success
14/03/2017
Methody former pupils Catherine Olver and Donal McCann received diplomas at the 2017 Royal College of Organists Conferment of Diplomas ceremony held in Southwark Cathedral, London on 11th March. Catherine, currently Senior Organ Scholar at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (from where the Chapel of Unity organ came any years ago) obtained Associateship (ARCO). She will be taking her Finals next term. Catherine recently gave an excellent and well-attended recital at Queens’ College, Cambridge and toured New Zealand with her own Chapel choir last summer. Donal, having obtained ARCO two years ago, has now achieved the ‘gold standard’ Fellowship (FRCO) and in doing so won three prizes. He was also awarded the Coventry Cathedral Recital Award 2016/17 and the Dr John Birch Scholarship. Catherine and Donal had the honour of sharing the stage, so to speak, with two distinguished musicians who were awarded the Medal of the RCO, Anne Marsden Thomas MBE, the renowned teacher and player and Ton Koopman from Holland, one of the world’s leading Early Music keyboard players and conductors of recent times. After the diplomas are presented each year, a top organist gives a recital. This year it was Ashley Grote, Director of Music at Norwich Cathedral and a former organ scholar at Kings’ College Cambridge, the position to which Donal has been elected with effect from next September. Donal was selected to give the vote of thanks to Ashley and also play Heraldic Flourish by Francis Jackson as the platform party departed.
