JUNK KOUTURE REGIONAL FINALS On Monday 6th March Sophie and Natalie Rourke and their parents went with Dr Moore and Miss Meir to the Regional Finals of the all-Ireland and Scotland Junk Kouture competition at the Millenium Forum in Derry. Sophie had done extremely well to get down to the last 400 entrants in the competition, 79 of whom were to model their creations at this event. As this was our first time taking part in the event, it was all very new! After registration, we were allocated dressing room which we shared with a school from Letterkenny. All of the other entrants and their teachers were very friendly and took us under their wings. The models were split into 4 blocks for rehearsals and, later that afternoon, the four judges spoke to the models and designers individually to allow them to see their creations up close. At 5.45, everyone but the models had to vacate the backstage area to give the models a chance to relax and prepare for the show. The teachers were treated to a VIP reception hosted by the sponsors the Bank of Ireland (well, we had a couple of sandwiches, some nibbles and cup cakes!) before the main event. The show was spectacular. There were some very dramatic and creative costumes made from everyone from fertiliser bags to CDs. Sophie put on a great performance but sadly didn’t make it to the final shortlist for the finals in Dublin. She did really well, given that she was one of the youngest participants there, and that this was our first year entering the competition. Roll on next year!
