Daniel Foils His Opponents to Win Bronze Medal
Congratulations to Daniel Sigurdsson 4S, on his success in the Public Schools Fencing Championship held at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in London yesterday. He represented Methodist College in the Junior Foil category.
Daniel got a bronze in a field of 106. The group included some of the strongest junior fencers in the UK representing schools including Eton, Harrow, Winchester College and many, many others.
Daniel came through two rounds of pools and cuts being ranked 6th going into the knockout stages. He got a bye into the last 64 where he won 15-3 against a boy from Millfield School Somerset. He won his last 32 fight 15-2 against a fencer from Whitgift School. In the last 16 he had an epic fight against a boy from Winchester College and came from 4-12 down to triumph 15-14 and reach the quarter finals.
Although he pulled a muscle in that match he handily beat a fencer from Dulwich College 15-9 to reach the semi-finals. Only at that stage did he lose the first fight of the day to the eventual winner of the competition. The fencers receiving gold and silver yesterday are ranked 2nd and 9th respectively in the British Fencing national cadet rankings.
Overall an outstanding achievement for Daniel.
